INTRODUCTION |
|
In 2016, the Medical Council of India (MCI) amended Clause 1.5 of the Indian Medical Council Regulations (Professional Conduct, Etiquette, and Ethics), 2002, making it mandatory for the medical practitioners to prescribe medicines by their generic names. The directive followed the revamping of the Jan Aushadhi Scheme (JAS) launched in November 2008 by the Government of India (GoI) to provide affordable and quality generic medicines to the needy and weaker sections of society.
Even though JAS was launched with the noble cause of providing affordable medicines to the weaker sections of society, the scheme initially faced several challenges such as poor supply chain management, competition from the state governments, quality issues, and lack of awareness among the public about generic medicines. |
